In Florida you can cook outside most of the year, which makes an outdoor kitchen one of the most used upgrades a home can have. Good planning keeps it working for years in sun, salt and storms.

1. Decide how you will use it

  • Grill station: a built in grill with counter space on both sides.
  • Entertaining kitchen: grill, sink, outdoor fridge and bar seating.
  • Full outdoor kitchen: add a side burner, pizza oven, ice maker, storage and dining space.

2. Pick the location

  • Close to the indoor kitchen makes carrying food easier.
  • Think about smoke and wind direction, away from doors and seating.
  • Check setbacks and HOA rules before you place anything near property lines.
  • A covered spot (pergola with a roof, or under the house roof line) protects appliances and lets you cook in summer rain.

3. Choose weather proof materials

  • Frame: concrete block or metal studs, not wood, which rots and attracts termites.
  • Countertops: granite and other dense stone hold up well. Some engineered quartz can fade or discolor in direct sun, so ask the maker.
  • Cabinets: marine grade polymer or high quality stainless steel. Near the coast, ask for 316 grade stainless, which resists salt corrosion better.
  • Flooring: pavers, travertine or textured tile with good slip resistance.

4. Plan the utilities early

  • Gas: natural gas line or propane tank. A licensed contractor must run gas lines.
  • Electric: outdoor rated outlets with GFCI protection for the fridge, lights and fans.
  • Water: a sink needs a supply and a drain.
  • Lighting over the grill and work areas.

5. Permits

Gas, electrical and plumbing work, plus roofs and large structures, usually need permits. A good contractor handles them.

What affects the cost

  • Size and number of appliances
  • Countertop and finish materials
  • Running gas, electric and water lines
  • A roof or pergola
  • New patio or pavers underneath

Frequently asked questions

Does an outdoor kitchen add home value?

In Florida, where outdoor living is a big selling point, a well built outdoor kitchen is usually seen as a plus by buyers.

How do I protect it during hurricanes?

Turn off gas, cover or bring in loose items like grills on carts, and secure furniture. Built in parts on a solid frame hold up best.

Post your outdoor kitchen project and compare bids from local outdoor living pros, or find a pro near you.
