Pavers vs Concrete Driveway: Pros, Cons and Cost

If you are replacing or adding a driveway, the choice usually comes down to poured concrete or pavers. Both work well in Florida. They differ in cost, looks and how they age.

Poured concrete

Pros

  • Lower upfront cost than pavers in most cases.
  • Fast to install: often poured in a day, though it needs time to cure before cars drive on it.
  • Clean, simple look that suits modern homes. Decorative finishes like stamping or exposed aggregate are available.

Cons

  • Cracks happen. Concrete expands, contracts and settles. Control joints limit cracking but rarely stop it.
  • Repairs show. Patches never quite match the color of the original slab.
  • Stains are harder to hide on a large plain surface.

Pavers

Pros

  • Easy, invisible repairs. A cracked or stained paver can be lifted and replaced.
  • Flexible: the joints let pavers move a little without cracking.
  • Better drainage: some water drains through the joints, and permeable pavers are available for even more.
  • Curb appeal: many colors, shapes and patterns.

Cons

  • Higher upfront cost.
  • Joint care: sand can wash out and weeds or ants can appear, which is why polymeric sand and sealing help.
  • Base matters: a poor base leads to sinking and ruts.

Side by side

  • Upfront cost: concrete lower, pavers higher.
  • Repairs: concrete patches show; pavers swap out cleanly.
  • Maintenance: both benefit from sealing every few years.
  • Heat: lighter colors of either stay cooler; very dark pavers get hot in summer.
  • Resale: pavers are often seen as an upgrade.

Which should you choose?

Choose concrete if budget is the top priority and you like a clean look. Choose pavers if you want a high end look, plan to stay long term, and value easy repairs. Either way, the installer's base work matters more than the material.

Frequently asked questions

Can pavers be laid over an existing concrete driveway?

Sometimes, using thin overlay pavers, if the slab is solid and height at the garage and drainage allow it. Ask installers to check.

Which handles heavy rain better?

Pavers, especially permeable pavers, let more water soak in. Concrete sends all runoff to the edges.

Get prices for both: post your driveway job and ask installers to quote concrete and pavers, or find a driveway pro near you.
