How to Hire a Home Improvement Pro: 7 Things to Check

The right pro makes a project easy. The wrong one can cost you money and stress. Before you hire anyone, check these seven things.

1. A valid license, when the work needs one

Many trades must be licensed by the state or county, such as roofing, electrical, plumbing and general contracting. Ask for the license number and look it up. On CSI Elite Services, pros with a verified license show a Licensed badge on their profile.

2. Insurance

A pro should carry general liability insurance, and workers' compensation if they have employees. If someone is hurt or your property is damaged, this protects you. Ask for a certificate of insurance. Pros on CSI with checked insurance show an Insured badge.

3. Reviews from real customers

Read several reviews, not just the star rating. Look for comments about showing up on time, communication and how problems were handled. Reviews marked Hired on CSI come from customers who booked the pro through the site.

4. Photos of past work

A good portfolio shows work like yours. Before and after photos are especially useful.

5. A written quote

Get the price, what is included (materials, cleanup, permits), and the timeline in writing. Comparing two or three quotes helps you spot a price that is too high or suspiciously low.

6. Clear payment terms

Be careful with large payments up front. A reasonable deposit for materials is common; paying in full before work starts is a red flag. Never pay in cash without a receipt.

7. Good communication

A pro who answers questions clearly before the job is more likely to keep you informed during it. Trust your instincts.

An easier way to compare

On CSI Elite Services you can post your job for free with photos, and local pros send bids you can compare side by side, with their badges, reviews and portfolio. You can chat with them privately, and contact details are shared once you hire. Or browse pros near you.
