Should You Clean Your Solar Panels? A Florida Guide

Florida gets frequent rain, so many people assume their solar panels clean themselves. Rain helps, but it does not remove everything, and dirty panels make less power.

Do dirty solar panels really make less power?

Yes. Dust, pollen, salt film near the coast and especially bird droppings block sunlight. A light film may only cost a few percent of output, but heavy dirt or droppings over part of a panel can reduce output much more, because a shaded section limits the whole string of cells.

How often should you clean them?

  • Most Florida homes: once or twice a year.
  • Near the coast: salt film builds up, so twice a year or more.
  • Near construction, farms or busy roads: dust builds faster.
  • Panels with low tilt: dirt and water sit on flatter panels, so they need it more.

A simple check: compare your monthly production in your solar app with the same month last year. A drop with no obvious reason is a sign it is time.

How to clean solar panels safely

  1. Check your warranty. Some panel makers say which methods are allowed.
  2. Clean early in the morning or in the evening. Cold water on hot glass can cause stress, and water dries into spots in the sun.
  3. Use soft water and a soft brush. Deionized or filtered water leaves fewer spots. A soft brush on an extension pole is enough for most dirt.
  4. Skip strong chemicals and high pressure. Pressure washers can damage seals and void warranties.
  5. Stay off the roof if you can. Working from the ground with a pole is much safer.

When to call a pro

If your panels are on a second story or steep roof, hire a pro. They have the right brushes and water systems, and they can spot loose wiring, damaged panels or nests under the array.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a pressure washer on solar panels?

No. High pressure can damage the seals and frames. Low pressure water and a soft brush are the safe choice.

Is cleaning worth the cost?

For large systems, systems near the coast or panels with heavy droppings, cleaning usually pays for itself in extra power. Compare your production before and after.
