Smart Ways to Cut Your Cooling Bill

In Florida, Georgia summers, the UAE and Jordan, air conditioning is usually the biggest part of the power bill. The good news: some of the best savings cost little or nothing. Start at the top of this list and work down.
1. Use a smart thermostat
A smart thermostat raises the temperature a few degrees while you are out or asleep, then cools the home before you get back. Many can be controlled from your phone and learn your schedule. Some power companies offer rebates for installing one.
2. Keep the AC in good shape
- Change or clean filters every one to three months.
- Keep the outdoor unit clear of plants and debris.
- Have the system serviced once a year. A clean, properly charged system uses less power.
3. Stop the leaks
Cool air escaping through gaps around doors, windows, attic hatches and ducts is money lost. Weatherstripping, caulking and sealing ducts are some of the cheapest upgrades with a real payback.
4. Add insulation in the attic
A hot attic heats the ceiling below it all day. Topping up attic insulation keeps that heat out and helps the AC run less.
5. Block the sun
- Window films and solar screens reduce heat from sunny windows.
- Close blinds on the sunny side during the hottest hours.
- Shade trees, awnings and pergolas help outside.
6. Let fans help
Ceiling fans make a room feel cooler, so you can set the thermostat a little higher. Turn them off when you leave the room: fans cool people, not rooms.
7. Consider solar
In sunny places, solar panels can offset a large part of cooling costs. Get a few quotes and ask about incentives in your area before you decide.
