Pool Deck Sealing Guide: Pavers, Travertine and Concrete

A pool deck is one of the hardest working surfaces at a Florida home. Pool chemicals, salt water systems, sunscreen, sun and constant wet and dry cycles all wear it down. The right sealer protects it, but the wrong one can make it slippery or hot.

Why seal a pool deck?

  • Blocks stains from leaves, sunscreen and rust.
  • Slows mildew and algae in shaded corners.
  • Protects against salt damage from salt water pools.
  • Keeps joint sand in place between pavers.

Safety first: slip resistance

Bare wet feet are the main concern on a pool deck. Glossy, film forming sealers can be slick. For most pool decks, choose:

  • A penetrating sealer that soaks in and leaves no film, or
  • A natural look or matte film sealer with an anti-slip additive mixed in.

By deck type

Concrete pavers

Clean, re-sand joints with polymeric sand if needed, then apply a natural look or matte paver sealer. Avoid heavy wet look coatings near the water.

Travertine

Travertine stays cool and is popular around Florida pools, but it is porous and soaks up stains. Use a penetrating sealer made for natural stone. It protects without changing the texture or making it slick.

Concrete and cool deck

Plain concrete can take a penetrating or acrylic sealer with grit. Textured cool deck finishes should be cleaned and coated with products made for them, which keeps them light colored and cooler underfoot.

How often to reseal

Check every year. Most pool decks need resealing every one to three years, more often with salt water pools and full sun.

Prep tips

  • Clean with a mild cleaner, not strong acid, especially near the pool.
  • Let the deck dry fully, ideally 24 hours or more.
  • Keep sealer out of the pool water and off the coping tile.
  • Do not seal in direct midday sun; the sealer can dry too fast and streak.

Frequently asked questions

Will sealing make my pool deck hotter?

Dark wet look sealers can. Matte and penetrating sealers barely change the surface temperature.

Can I seal a salt water pool deck?

Yes, and you should. Salt crystals inside the stone can cause flaking over time. A penetrating sealer helps keep salt water out.
