Myth or Fact: Does Sealing Pavers Make Them Slippery?

It is one of the most common worries we hear: "If I seal my pool deck, will it get slippery?" The answer is: it can, but it does not have to.

Why some sealed pavers feel slippery

  • Glossy, wet-look sealers leave a smooth film on top of the pavers. When wet, that film can feel slick.
  • Too many coats build up a thick layer that fills the natural texture of the paver.
  • The wrong sealer for the surface, such as a high-gloss product on smooth travertine.

How pros keep it safe

  • Natural or matte sealers soak into the paver instead of sitting on top, so the surface keeps its grip.
  • Anti-slip additives are fine grit mixed into the sealer that adds texture you can feel.
  • Thin, even coats instead of a heavy build-up.
  • Testing a small area first, then walking on it wet.

The verdict

Myth, mostly. Sealing does not make pavers slippery by itself. The type of sealer and how it is applied make the difference. For pool decks and steps, ask your pro for a natural finish or an anti-slip additive.

Also a myth: "Sealing is just for looks"

Sealer also protects against stains, fading and weeds, and it locks the joint sand in place. In Florida's sun and rain, that protection matters.
