Home EV Charger Installation: What You Need to Know

Most electric car owners charge at home overnight. A home charger is a simple project when the electrical system is ready for it, and a bigger one when it is not.

Level 1 vs Level 2

  • Level 1 uses a regular 120 volt outlet and the cord that comes with many cars. It adds only a few miles of range per hour: fine for short commutes, slow for everything else.
  • Level 2 uses 240 volts, like a dryer or range. It charges many times faster and can refill most cars overnight. This is what most people install.

What installation involves

  1. Panel check. An electrician looks at your panel's capacity and free space. Level 2 chargers commonly need a 40 to 60 amp circuit. Older or full panels may need an upgrade or a load management device.
  2. Choosing the spot. Close to where you park and as close to the panel as practical. A short run costs less.
  3. Running the circuit. New wire from the panel to the charger location, in the garage or outdoors in weather rated conduit.
  4. Mounting the charger (hardwired) or installing a 240 volt outlet for a plug-in unit.
  5. Permit and inspection. Most Florida jurisdictions require an electrical permit for a new 240 volt circuit.

What affects the cost

  • Distance from the panel to the charger
  • Whether the panel needs an upgrade
  • Indoor garage vs outdoor installation
  • Trenching for a detached garage or driveway post
  • Permit fees
  • The charger itself, if the electrician supplies it

Tips for Florida homes

  • Choose a charger rated for outdoor use if it will be exposed to rain and sun.
  • Ask about surge protection; lightning is common.
  • Check your utility's website for EV rates or rebates.
  • If you have or plan solar, ask how the charger can work with it.

Hire a licensed electrician

A 240 volt circuit is not a DIY job. Hire a licensed electrician who pulls the permit. It protects your home, your insurance and the car's warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a new electrical panel?

Not always. Many homes have room for the circuit. If yours does not, a load management device can sometimes avoid a full upgrade.

How long does installation take?

A simple garage install is often done in a few hours, plus time for the permit and inspection.

Post your EV charger job with a photo of your panel and parking spot, and licensed electricians send you bids.
