How Often Should You Clean Gutters in Florida?

In many states, gutter cleaning is a fall chore. In Florida, leaves, palm debris, oak tassels and roof grit fall all year, and heavy summer storms push a lot of water through your gutters in a short time.
The short answer: twice a year, more under trees
- Most homes: twice a year. A good schedule is late spring, before the rainy season and hurricane season start on June 1, and again in late fall or winter.
- Homes under oaks, pines or palms: three or four times a year.
- Homes with gutter guards: check once or twice a year; guards reduce clogs but do not stop them completely.
Signs your gutters need cleaning now
- Water spills over the edge during rain instead of going down the downspout.
- Plants or weeds growing in the gutters.
- Gutters sagging or pulling away from the fascia.
- Stains or peeling paint on the fascia and walls below the gutters.
- Puddles or washed out soil near the foundation.
- Mosquitoes around the house: standing water in gutters is a breeding spot.
Why clogged gutters cost money
- Fascia and soffit rot from water sitting against the wood.
- Roof edge damage when water backs up under the shingles.
- Foundation and landscaping damage from water pouring off the roof edge in one spot.
- Heavier gutters full of wet debris pull loose, especially in strong winds.
Before hurricane season
Clean gutters and downspouts move storm water away from the house fast. Clogged ones overflow, and loose, heavy gutters can tear off in high winds and become debris. Add gutter cleaning to your hurricane preparation list each May.
DIY or hire a pro?
A one story home with easy access is a reasonable DIY job with a stable ladder, gloves and a helper. Two story homes, steep roofs and tile roofs are safer for a pro, who can also check the downspouts, reattach loose sections and spot roof damage.
Frequently asked questions
Are gutter guards worth it?
They cut down on cleaning, especially under trees, but fine debris and oak tassels still build up. Plan to have them checked.
Should gutter cleaning include the downspouts?
Yes. A clean gutter with a clogged downspout still overflows. Ask the pro to flush them.
