The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. The best time to prepare your home is before a storm is forecast, when contractors are available and stores are stocked.
Before the season (April and May)
Roof and gutters
- Have the roof inspected for loose or missing shingles and cracked tiles.
- Clean gutters and downspouts and reattach loose sections.
- Check that soffits and fascia are secure.
Windows and doors
- Test shutters: make sure tracks are clean, panels are labeled and hardware is ready.
- Check that impact windows and doors close and lock properly.
- Think about the garage door: it is often the weakest opening. Ask about a wind rated door or bracing.
Yard and trees
- Trim dead branches and limbs over the roof. Hire a licensed, insured tree service for large trees.
- Plan where outdoor furniture, grills and planters will go when a storm comes.
- Clear drains and swales so water can flow.
Power and water
- Service your generator and test it under load. Never run it indoors or in a garage.
- Consider a transfer switch or interlock installed by a licensed electrician.
- Know how to shut off main water, gas and power.
Paperwork
- Review your insurance: windstorm coverage, hurricane deductible and flood insurance, which is separate.
- Take dated photos and video of your home inside and out.
- Store policies and important documents in a waterproof bag and online.
When a storm is forecast
- Install shutters or panels.
- Bring in or tie down everything loose outside.
- Fill prescriptions, get cash, and fill your car's tank.
- Charge phones and power banks.
- Follow evacuation orders for your zone.
After the storm
- Stay away from downed power lines and standing water.
- Photograph all damage before cleanup.
- Make temporary repairs to prevent more damage, such as tarping, and keep receipts.
- Be wary of anyone who shows up unasked offering repairs. Read our guide on storm repair scams.
Frequently asked questions
Does home insurance cover flooding?
Standard policies usually do not. Flood insurance is separate, and new policies often have a waiting period before coverage starts.
When should I trim trees?
Before the season starts. Right before a storm, tree services are booked and pickup stops.
Get ready early: post your job for roof checks, gutter cleaning, tree trimming or shutters, and compare bids from local pros.
