How to Choose a Pressure Washer for Home Use

A pressure washer is one of the most useful tools a Florida homeowner can own: mildew, dirt and algae build up fast here. Picking the right one comes down to a few numbers and how you will use it.

What the numbers mean

  • PSI (pounds per square inch) is the force of the water. More PSI removes tougher grime.
  • GPM (gallons per minute) is how much water flows. More GPM rinses and cleans large areas faster.
  • Cleaning units = PSI x GPM. It is the best single number for comparing machines.

Electric or gas?

Electric

  • Usually about 1,500 to 2,300 PSI.
  • Quieter, lighter, no fuel or oil, starts with a button.
  • Best for cars, patio furniture, small patios, screens (on low settings) and light jobs.

Gas

  • Usually about 2,500 to 4,000 PSI and higher GPM.
  • Louder and heavier, needs fuel and engine care.
  • Best for driveways, large paver areas, pool decks and heavy stains.

Which size for which job

  • Cars, grills, outdoor furniture: electric, 1,500 to 2,000 PSI, with a wide tip.
  • Small patio and walkway: electric, about 2,000 PSI.
  • Driveway and pavers: gas, about 2,800 to 3,300 PSI, with a surface cleaner.
  • Roofs, stucco, screens: do not use high pressure. These need soft washing. See pressure washing vs soft washing.

Attachments worth having

  • Surface cleaner: a spinning disc that cleans flat surfaces evenly with no stripes. A must for driveways and pavers.
  • Quick connect nozzles: wider angles (25 and 40 degree) for most jobs. Avoid the narrow 0 degree tip on concrete, wood and anything painted.
  • Soap nozzle or foam cannon for applying cleaners.
  • Extension wand for second story areas without a ladder.

Safety tips

  • Never point the wand at people, pets or yourself. High pressure water can cut skin.
  • Wear eye protection and closed shoes.
  • Do not use a ladder with a gas pressure washer; the kickback can throw you off balance.
  • Start with the widest tip and farthest distance, then move closer.

Frequently asked questions

Can a pressure washer damage pavers?

Yes. A narrow tip or too much pressure can wash out joint sand and etch the surface. Use a surface cleaner and re-sand the joints after.

Should I buy or rent?

If you will use it a few times a year, buying usually pays off. For a one time big job, rent a strong gas unit or hire a pro.
