Both sealers protect your pavers. The big difference is how they look when they are done, and that choice affects safety and upkeep too.

Wet look sealer

A wet look sealer makes pavers look like they just got rained on: deeper colors and a satin to glossy shine. Most are solvent-based or water-based acrylics.

  • Best for: driveways, front walks and patios where you want colors to stand out.
  • Pros: rich color, easy to clean, good stain protection.
  • Watch out for: a slicker surface when wet. On pool decks and steps, ask for an anti-slip additive mixed into the sealer.
  • Upkeep: the shine fades with sun and traffic, so it is usually renewed every two to three years in Florida.

Natural look sealer

A natural look (or matte) sealer soaks into the paver and leaves little or no visible change. Many are penetrating water-based products.

  • Best for: pool decks, travertine and natural stone, and anyone who likes the pavers as they are.
  • Pros: keeps the original texture and grip, less slippery, no shiny film to wear unevenly.
  • Watch out for: colors do not get the same boost.
  • Upkeep: similar timing, though worn spots are less noticeable.

Quick comparison

  • Look: wet look is glossy and darker; natural look is matte and unchanged.
  • Grip: natural look keeps more grip; wet look benefits from an anti-slip additive near water.
  • Stain protection: both protect well when applied correctly.
  • Travertine and natural stone: usually a natural look, penetrating sealer.

Tips for a good result with either one

  • Clean the pavers well and let them dry fully, usually at least 24 hours after washing.
  • Check the forecast: no rain for a day after sealing.
  • Apply thin, even coats. Thick coats are the main cause of a cloudy or white finish.
  • Do not mix brands or types over an old sealer without checking that they are compatible.
