Bathroom Remodel Planning Checklist

A bathroom remodel packs plumbing, electrical, tile and waterproofing into a small room. Most surprises and budget overruns come from decisions made too late. Work through this list before any demolition starts.
1. Set your goals
- Is this a refresh (new vanity, fixtures, paint) or a full gut remodel?
- Who uses it: kids, guests, aging parents? Think about grab bars and a curbless shower for long term use.
- What bothers you most about the current bathroom?
2. Set a budget with a cushion
Add 10 to 20 percent for surprises. Behind old tile you can find water damage, rotted subfloor or outdated plumbing.
3. Keep the layout if you can
Moving the toilet, shower or sink means moving pipes, which adds cost. Keeping fixtures where they are is the biggest money saver.
4. Choose materials that handle humidity
- Floors: porcelain tile or quality vinyl plank. Avoid solid wood.
- Shower walls: porcelain or ceramic tile, or large format panels.
- Vanity: plywood or solid surface holds up better than particleboard in damp rooms.
- Grout: consider epoxy or sealed grout to resist mildew.
5. Do not skip waterproofing
The tile is not what keeps water out; the membrane behind it is. Ask the contractor what waterproofing system they use in the shower and on the floor.
6. Plan ventilation
Florida humidity plus hot showers is a recipe for mold. Install an exhaust fan vented outside (not just into the attic), sized for the room, ideally with a humidity sensor or timer.
7. Lighting and outlets
- Light at the mirror from the sides or above, not just a ceiling light.
- GFCI protected outlets near water.
- Consider a night light or lighted mirror.
8. Permits and timeline
Plumbing and electrical changes usually need permits. Ask how long the bathroom will be out of use, and plan for another bathroom if it is your only one.
9. Hire carefully
- Get at least three written bids with the same scope.
- Check licenses and insurance.
- Ask for photos of past bathroom jobs and references.
- Agree on a payment schedule tied to progress, not a large upfront payment.

Usually yes, if you have another bathroom.
Post your bathroom remodel with photos and a few notes, and local remodelers send you bids to compare.
